Transition to Secondary

Exploring the challenges of moving up to Secondary school.

Moving from primary to secondary education can be exciting and daunting for both you and your child. 

We aim to help ease the transition by exploring the differences between the two, discussing the importance of making friendships and giving pupils the experience of navigating their new school day.

For Year 6 and their parents and carers.

Transition to Secondary is split over two inter-linked sessions:

In Part One we cover:

  • Learning to read a school timetable and navigate a secondary school day

  • Exploring pupils concerns about moving up to secondary

  • Create strategies for making new friends at their new school

In Part Two we explore:

  • How to navigate independent travel

  • Exploring mobile phone ownership and safety

  • Q&A with the secondary school staff (fi held within a school)

  • Managing homework and

  • Keeping safe with new friends

  • Q and A with Funpact youth mentors (in year 7-9) to hear about their lived experience at secondary school and learn some tips from them about how to succeed at secondary

  • Opportunity for parents/carers to speak to current secondary school parents about their lived experience and learn some tips and tricks to support parenting a secondary school child
